THE PRIDE PARADE - SEASON 2 EPISODE 3
FADE IN:
INT. PIERRE'S FLAT (PIERRE'S BEDROOM) - NIGHT
[Summer of 2018. PIERRE is sitting on the floor with a box of memorabilia, looking through his old junk. Semi-buried in the pile, there is a folded up poster promoting last season's city pride parade. He picks it up, examining it closely and looks out at the night sky. He puts it back.]
DISSOLVE TO:
INT. "STRAIGHT TO YOUR BED" (PIERRE & V'S OFFICE) - DAY (THE NEXT DAY)
[Morning. PIERRE opens the door to his and V'S office with the folded up poster in his pocket. V is doing paperwork at her desk, clicking her pen.]
PIERRE:
V?
V:
Yeah?
PIERRE:
Uh-Do you want to go to the pride parade with me this Saturday? I think you would enjoy it.
V:
What's that?
[PIERRE turns to leave to the storefront.]
PIERRE:
It's nothing. Forget I asked.
V:
Now I wanna know! Come back here!
[PIERRE turns back to face V.]
PIERRE:
(sighs)
It's a gay—
V:
Oh! Is it that rainbow thing on the streets? I saw the ads for it earlier.
PIERRE:
Yes? It's kind of like that.
V:
I wanted to go and ask you what that was, but I didn't want to be a bother.
[PIERRE sits down on his spinning office chair, moving it towards V to talk to fae.]
PIERRE:
You're not a bother. You can ask me whatever you want. That's what I'm here for, kid. To help you figure this out.
V:
So that thing is called a "pride parade"?
PIERRE:
Yeah. Remember when at the start of June I got you to put up some subtle rainbow decorations?
V:
I did find those things similar.
PIERRE:
June is the start of Pride month where all of us who are gay and beyond get to celebrate existing really. The parade is another activity for us to be loudly gay. I actually attended the first parade here back in…
[V points at PIERRE.]
V:
Old.
PIERRE:
I know I'm old. Stop reminding me.
[pause.]
V:
Why do you want me to come? I'm straighter than you.
(muttered)
Which is still a surprise to me.
PIERRE:
(shrug)
Seems like a fun thing for all of us to do together. I don't want to make you feel left out since I spend so much time out of work with Dick and not you.
V:
I told you I don't care.
PIERRE:
It's not healthy for you to be cooped up here all day. Do you wanna come or not?
V:
Why don't you ask your boyfriend to go? He's gay. Not me.
PIERRE:
I-I'm not sure if he's out or not. I don't know if he would be okay with that. Our relationship being known and celebrated. People are going to recognise him.
V:
Just ask him if he wants to go.
PIERRE:
It can be the two of us.
[PIERRE shuffles closer to V.]
And besides… I want you, dear—fuck. Sorry.
[PIERRE shakes his head and rolls away from fae. His head is lowered.]
V:
(unphased)
Ask him. I want to get to know him too. I think this is a good opportunity. Or it can be a date thing. I don't mind. I'm sure he'll say yes.
PIERRE:
I know that.
[PIERRE pauses and fiddles with the poster in his pocket.]
I'm…nervous, alright?
[V rolls her eyes, clicking her pen.]
V:
Are you serious? What's the worst he could say?
PIERRE:
(blushes)
I-Fine! You're right. I'll ask him.
[PIERRE gets up from his chair.]
PIERRE:
You okay with going home alone tonight?
V:
Yeah. Go tell your boyfriend you wanna be really gay.
PIERRE:
(laughs)
Good.
[Before PIERRE exits the room, V smiles subtly.]
V:
I'll still go with you if he says no, okay?
PIERRE:
Thanks, kid.
[PIERRE heads back out to the storefront. V returns to doing paperwork at her desk.]
FADE OUT:
FADE IN:
INT. DICK'S HOUSE - DAY TO NIGHT
[MONTAGE: Various scenes of PIERRE on edge around DICK, when DICK picks him up, when they're eating dinner, when they watch TV, when they cuddle. The montage ends with PIERRE staring at the ceiling at night.]
DISSOLVE TO:
INT. DICK'S HOUSE (KITCHEN) - NIGHT
[12:45 A.M. DICK is cooking macaroni and cheese on the stove in the dark, only having the stove light on. He is humming. PIERRE is sitting on the kitchen island, fiddling with his sleeve.]
PIERRE:
Dick?
DICK:
Yes, dear?
PIERRE:
V said I should ask you if you wanted to come to the pride parade with us on Saturday. You don't have to come obviously—
DICK:
I'll go.
[pause.]
PIERRE:
What?
DICK:
I want to get to know your daughter more. She seems like a good kid.
[DICK turns off the stove and pours macaroni and cheese into two bowls.]
PIERRE:
(awkward chuckle)
She's not my daughter. She's many things—my assistant, my roommate, fellow basement escapee, but my daughter is not one of them. She's some American's daughter. She'll be reunited with them eventually.
[DICK grabs the two bowls and sits next to PIERRE, handing him a bowl.]
DICK:
You treat her like one. You're not a half-bad father yourself, Pierre.
PIERRE:
I would argue otherwise. I had children before this you know?
DICK:
Really?
PIERRE:
I-I didn't treat them the greatest. They both died before the basement, so at least there's that.
DICK:
I'm sorry.
PIERRE:
Don't apologise.
DICK:
Let me express my sympathies the way I want to, dear.
PIERRE:
Alright. Are you going or not? You don't have too.
DICK:
I said I would. I haven't attended one in a few years. This will be my first one out. Pride parade or not, I would not turn down an opportunity to be with you, dear. I would say yes to almost anything.
[DICK kisses PIERRE'S cheek.]
DICK:
I love you.
PIERRE:
I love you too.
DICK:
Was this the thing you were worried about all day?
PIERRE:
(sheepishly)
Maybe. You could tell I was worried?
DICK:
It's quite clear, dear. You're always worried about something. About money or business. I tell you to relax. You never do.
PIERRE:
I try. There's a lot in my life to worry about.
DICK:
And you don't deserve to carry all of that alone. That's what I am here for. You can tell me anything. I wouldn't say anything rude for the fun of it.
PIERRE:
I know.
DICK:
Come on. Let's get back to bed now, old man.
[PIERRE laughs.]
PIERRE:
Who are you calling old? You're the one still aging. You're physically older than I am.
[DICK stands up, taking both of their empty bowls to the sink. He returns to PIERRE who stands up.]
DICK:
And which one of us remembers World War Two?
[PIERRE rolls his eyes. DICK places a hand on PIERRE'S shoulder, leading the tired man to his room. He closes the door behind them.]
FADE OUT:
FADE IN:
INT. PIERRE'S FLAT - DAY (SATURDAY)
[Noon. PIERRE is sitting on the couch on his phone, waiting for V. V walks out of her room. Fae stops in front of PIERRE. He looks up at fae.]
V:
Pierre! Does this outfit look gay enough?
PIERRE:
(chuckles)
You don't have to dress gay.
V:
(pouts)
I wanna fit in with the gays.
PIERRE:
You're supposed to stand out. Not fit in with us. Just be you.
V:
But that's not fun.
PIERRE:
Here.
[PIERRE hands V a pair of white plastic rainbow glasses from his pockets.]
PIERRE:
Gay enough now?
[V takes her glasses off and puts on the rainbow glasses. She nods.]
PIERRE:
Good because Dick's waiting for us at the front. Come on.
[PIERRE gets off the couch. V follows him. He opens the door for her. He closes the door behind them. They exit the building, walking down the stairs.]
EXT. OUTSIDE PIERRE'S FLAT - DAY
[When they get there, DICK is sitting on the curb of the main driveway. He gets up slowly upon seeing PIERRE & V, grabbing his cane and bag.]
DICK:
Hello, darling.
[DICK kisses PIERRE on the cheek then turns to an unamused V.]
DICK:
Hello, V. How are you?
V:
Okay. I like your outfit though.
DICK:
Thank you! I like yours too.
[V turns to PIERRE.]
V:
Why is Dick here? Wouldn't he drive to the parade? Where even is it?
PIERRE:
Down North Street, so only a few blocks away from us. It's better to walk.
[PIERRE, DICK & V walk down the road, following PIERRE'S lead. As they turn the block to North Street, there is a crowd of people and rainbow decorations with loud music playing in the background. V covers faer ears.]
EXT. NORTH STREET - DAY
V:
I didn't expect it to be this loud.
PIERRE:
You know what they say about us, "loud and proud" am I right?
(awkward chuckle)
V:
I understand that, but—nevermind.
[They stop walking. V stops covering faer ears. She looks around at the parade.]
V:
What do I do now?
PIERRE:
Whatever you want really as long as you are having fun. Walk, march, cheer, eat, meet new people. Go explore. You're an adult. I'm not responsible for you.
DICK:
Or you can stay with us! I don't know how well you know North Street.
V:
Not well.
[short pause.]
PIERRE:
…You drive through this road to get home?
V:
(embarrassed laugh)
Not well.
[A group of three who are struggling to set up a tent wave at DICK, V & PIERRE. PIERRE waves back. One of them calls out PIERRE's name and beckons him over to where their group is.]
V:
Who are those people?
PIERRE:
Some of my old friends. And organizers of this event. I think they need my help.
[PIERRE pulls out a folded-up information sheet/map from his pockets and gives it to DICK.]
PIERRE:
Look after V for me.
V:
I don't need—
[DICK nods. PIERRE heads over to his friends, leaving V & DICK alone.]
DICK:
I guess you're with me now.
V:
Guess so.
DICK:
Before we do anything—
[DICK looks for his portable chair in his bag for a few seconds. He stops.]
DICK:
Ah. I seem to have forgotten it.
[V looks inside the bag for a second.]
V:
Forget what?
DICK:
Nothing. Is it okay if we find somewhere to sit?
V:
Yeah, sure.
[V looks around for a moment and points to a nearby bench.]
V:
Uh-I think there's one over there.
[V runs over to the bench and waits for DICK who is lagging behind.]
DICK:
Thank you.
[DICK sits down and places his cane on the bench. He catches his breath for a few minutes before unfolding the information sheet/map.]
DICK:
What do you want to do?
[V shrugs.]
DICK:
This looks interesting.
[DICK points to a face paint activity on the information sheet/map.]
DICK:
Want to do that? It doesn't seem like it requires any standing on my part.
[V shrugs again.]
V:
Seems fun.
[V stands up. DICK places the information sheet/map into the front pocket of his bag. V extends a hand towards DICK. He takes the hand and his cane.]
DICK:
Thank you.
V:
You're welcome.
[pause.]
V:
Now where do we go?
DISSOLVE TO:
EXT. NORTH STREET - DAY
[V & DICK arrive at the face-painting tent and take a seat. On the table, there are sets of multi-coloured paints, handheld mirrors, and examples of painted faces and pride flags in booklets. The worker upon seeing them places two brushes in front of them.]
UNNAMED WORKER:
Here are some paints you are free to use however you like! You can ask one of us if you want us to paint something for you free of charge.
[V opens the palette up.]
DICK:
Thank you.
UNNAMED WORKER:
Remember to put the dirty brushes—
[UNNAMED WORKER points to a bin on the other side of the tent full of dirty brushes.]
UNNAMED WORKER:
—there where we will clean them. Do you have any questions?
DICK:
We are alright. Thank you.
V:
Is it okay if I paint your face? It's okay if not. I can just paint my own.
[V grabs a mirror and places it near her.]
DICK:
It's alright. You can.
[V smiles.]
V:
Are you sure? There's a small chance it'll actually look good.
DICK:
Isn't this just for fun? Go ahead.
V:
What do you want on your face?
[pause.]
DICK:
Maybe like a small heart on my cheek with the gay flag colours? That doesn't seem too difficult.
V:
Yeah I can do that. With messed up colours, but I can still do that.
[V peers over to look at the booklet for a reference and starts painting his cheek. While V is painting DICK's face, DICK attempts to grab another information sheet/map near them in case he needs it.]
V:
Stay still.
DICK:
Sorry.
V:
It's okay.
[V concentrates on painting DICK's cheek in silence for the next few minutes, muttering to faerself. DICK looks out at the parade, visibly tired. V finishes up painting.]
V:
There. Hope you don't completely hate it.
[V puts the paints away and grabs the mirror, putting it in front of DICK. DICK smiles.]
DICK:
I don't know what you're talking about. It's nice. Do you want me to paint your face?
[V puts the mirror down and hands the palette to DICK.]
V:
Sure. I don't know what I want though.
[pause.]
DICK:
How about a matching heart?
V:
I'm not gay though. I don't have a flag with colours.
DICK:
(chuckles)
We'll replace them with your favourite colours. What are they?
[V shrugs.]
DICK:
Warm colours?
[pause.]
V:
Okay.
[DICK starts to paint V's face with his shaky hands and finishes a minute or two slower than V did. He puts the brush and paint away, trying to smile the best he could.]
DICK:
Do you want to see it? I did it the best I could.
[V grabs the mirror beside DICK, making him flinch. She looks at herself through the mirror. The face paint is overlapping with her make-up that was covering her pumpkin skin. Fae places the mirror down.]
V:
I like it.
[pause.]
V:
Can we go eat now? I'm hungry. Maybe we could find Pierre there.
DICK:
Yeah…
[DICK grabs his cane to stand up. V collects their brushes, placing them into the dirty bin. They leave the tent and head for where the food trucks are.]
DISSOLVE TO:
EXT. NORTH STREET - DAY
[DICK & V are sitting down on an outdoor food court bench. V is finishing up her food while DICK is looking at his surroundings longingly. He is visibly tired. PIERRE walks towards them.]
PIERRE:
Hello.
DICK:
Hello.
[DICK glances at V.]
V:
There he is. I'm gonna go on my own now. Bye, gays!
[V gets up from the seat and turns around to run away. DICK stops her, coughing before he speaks.]
DICK:
(strained)
V, You need the map!
[DICK holds up the map for V to take. V turns around and grabs it.]
V:
Right, sorry! Thanks!
[V runs off. PIERRE sits down next to DICK.]
PIERRE:
How's V? Is she doing good?
[DICK nods, clearly uneasy.]
PIERRE:
Are you okay?
[DICK plops his hand bag into PIERRE'S lap without looking at him.]
DICK:
Carry this for me.
PIERRE:
Of course.
[PIERRE looks up and down DICK.]
PIERRE:
You're acting weird.
[DICK darts his eyes away.]
DICK:
I-it's nothing.
PIERRE:
What's wrong?
[pause.]
DICK:
I'm exhausted, honey.
PIERRE:
V might be hard to work with at times, but surely she isn't that bad, especially in front of other people that aren't sexist or trying to hurt her occasionally.
[DICK smiles subtlety.]
DICK:
Not what I meant, love. She's a good kid.
[pause.]
DICK:
The heat and walking is getting to me. I'm sorry. I just don't know if I can make it through to the march today.
PIERRE:
You don't have to, babe.
DICK:
I know. I just didn't want to ruin the fun. I'm sure I'll be fine. I've been through worse.
PIERRE:
I don't want you to suffer because of us. We can go home now if you want. I can get V.
DICK:
No, it's fine. Let her have fun. This is her first parade. I don't want to cut it short.
PIERRE:
She won't mind if we have to leave.
[PIERRE places his pumpkin hand on DICK'S hand, squeezing it softly.]
PIERRE:
Dick, I care about your well-being and feelings. Don't push yourself too hard. It's not good for you.
DICK:
I know. You tell me all the time.
PIERRE:
Because it's true. You shouldn't work your body until exhaustion. I hate seeing you in pain, mon amour. It breaks my heart. Now tell me. Are you sure you are going to be okay?
DICK:
It hurts, but I don't want to leave yet. I think I'll be fine for at least one more hour before I start pushing it.
PIERRE:
Are you sure?
DICK:
As long as I'm taking rests and not burning to death.
PIERRE:
Of course. Well, what do you wanna do in this hour?
[DICK kisses PIERRE on the cheek.]
DICK:
I don't mind as long as you're here, and I'm not getting tortured.
[PIERRE chuckles and thinks for a minute, looking around.]
PIERRE:
How about we sit under some shade for a bit? It'll be cooler.
DICK:
That sounds nice.
[PIERRE kisses DICK gently.]
PIERRE:
Then that's settled.
[PIERRE gets up, putting DICK'S bag on his shoulders. He gives DICK his cane, helping him up from the seat. DICK stands up, wobbling, before he gains his footing.]
PIERRE:
Are you okay?
[DICK nods. PIERRE reaches to hold DICK'S hand, squeezing it. PIERRE & DICK walk to the nearest tree—a large oak tree. PIERRE sits down, leaning against the wood and DICK lies down on the grass, picking wildflowers.]
PIERRE:
How's business?
[PIERRE places DICK'S bag in front of him.]
DICK:
It's our day off. Why do you want to talk about business?
PIERRE:
(shrugs)
It's a conversation starter.
DICK:
I don't want to talk about business and stress you out about it. You've worried enough today. Relax, please.
PIERRE:
You know I can't help it.
[DICK tucks a wildflower behind his ear.]
DICK:
I know. Let yourself enjoy life a little. You'll see it isn't so bad.
PIERRE:
It's not so bad with you.
[DICK smiles.]
DICK:
I make you worry quite a lot though. Let me worry about myself.
[In a minute or two in silence, DICK goes through his bag, pulling out his information sheet/map and folding it into a paper fan. PIERRE looks up at the clear sky.]
PIERRE:
Maybe I should.
[PIERRE notices DICK fanning himself with the paper fan.]
PIERRE:
Can I have one of those?
[DICK hands PIERRE his current fan.]
PIERRE:
Thank you.
[PIERRE begins to fan himself. DICK is looking through his bag for another piece of scrap paper to make a fan out of.]
PIERRE:
It sure is hot out here. I don't remember the forecast predicting this.
DICK:
(chuckles lightly)
It's nice to know that it wasn't just user error. I'm quite bad at understanding the celsius forecast.
[DICK constructs another fan and fans himself.]
PIERRE:
At least it makes sense.
DICK:
It doesn't.
[PIERRE rolls his eyes and leans over to DICK, kissing him. After the kiss, DICK gets up and lies his head down on PIERRE's lap, continuing to fan himself. DICK smiles teasingly.]
DICK:
I'm right though.
[DICK is playing with a wildflower in front of his face. PIERRE takes the flower out of his hand with a smile.]
PIERRE:
Sure you are, babe.
[DICK pretends to frown.]
PIERRE:
I'll give it back if you give me food.
DICK:
I have a granola bar. I probably won't eat it anyway.
[DICK rolls over, reaching for his bag. He takes the granola bar and hands it to PIERRE. He returns to lying down on PIERRE'S lap.]
PIERRE:
Thank you.
[PIERRE unwraps it, taking a bite out of it. He hands the flower back to DICK. DICK places it behind PIERRE'S ear, smiling. He kisses PIERRE'S cheek. He wraps his hands around PIERRE'S waist. PIERRE kisses the top of his head, touching DICK'S hair gently. ]
DICK:
Thank you—
[DICK glances away.]
DICK:
For taking care of me.
[PIERRE kisses him.]
PIERRE:
Anytime.
[DICK smiles.]
DICK:
Love you.
PIERRE:
Love you more.
[DICK giggles and kisses PIERRE.]
DISSOLVE TO:
EXT. NORTH STREET - DAY
[One hour later. PIERRE & DICK are still sitting underneath the tree, when V runs up to them, carrying a few pieces of merch. DICK is sleeping on PIERRE'S lap.]
V:
(yelling)
There you two are! I was looking for you!
PIERRE:
He's sleeping, V.
[V sits down next to them.]
V:
(softer)
Sorry.
PIERRE:
You can keep talking. How is your day so far?
[V starts to talk about their day as the camera zooms out above the three. The end card flashes. The ending credits roll.]
FADE OUT:
THE END
