“Do you wanna tell me why you're stressed or do you not wanna talk about it?” Stan asks. Kyle screws his face up like he’s going to snarl something smart, but bites down on his bottom lip instead, rubbing at his reddened right eye and shrugging.
“You’ll just think I’m being stupid and dramatic,” he says.
Stan shrugs and tries for wry wit.
“Stupid? Never. Dramatic? Maybe.”
Kyle’s eyes narrow in a poisonous expression, the kind that would make a lesser man wilt. Wrong choice of words, definitely wrong choice of words.
Kyle is upset. Stan tries to comfort him in the best ways he knows how.

Kyle stares at him, mouth agape in offense which Stan knows is just for show, catching the way the corners of his lips curl upwards, the ‘yes’ unspoken. “People could see.”
Stan goes to hold him in a way that is too intimate for the public, maybe too romantic, maybe too soft. But Kyle softens completely in his arms, trusting his completely, eyes big and willing. Stan whispers, “what if I want them to.”

The end of term exam periods was something every student seemed to dread.
Kyle didn’t mind.
Sat on the floor hunched over the open textbook, his eyes engulfed its pages. Notes upon notes poured from his fingertips as though second nature, information pooling thoughtlessly through his notebook. The slouch in his back was enough to make him ache, but that was something he wouldn’t notice until later. Biting subconsciously on his bottom lip, the only thing that broke his concentration occasionally was the need to push his slipping glasses back up the hook of his nose.
That, and of course, the boy groaning beside him.
